2. If you’ve heard of oil pulling and haven’t tried it yet, then you’re probably already over it. Nothing’s worse than annoying health fads, especially ones that don’t really work. But oil pulling is a successful ancient Ayurvedic remedy… far from a fad.
This thing is amazing.
3. What is oil pulling?
Hey great question! Basically you take about a tablespoon of a natural oil such as olive oil, sesame oil or coconut oil and you gently swish that around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Did I say minutes? I meant to say secon- oh no wait, yeah minutes.
5. What?! Why?
Well on the surface, oil pulling does great wonders for whitening your teeth and strengthening your gums. But if you delve in deeper, you will find that oil pulling has been known to help with issues such as migraines, eczema, arthritis, hormone imbalances and sinus congestion to name just a few.
Don’t worry, they’ll never look as white as Ross’ teeth. Oil pulling produces a natural white colour.
7. What’s the best oil to use?
This varies from person to person. You will have to work out which oil works best for you- in regards to taste, price and availability. Anything from sunflower, to sesame and even some olive oils. Most people prefer coconut oil because of its subtle flavour and other healing properties. Just ensure that the oil you get is natural, unrefined, cold pressed and organic. Basically get the best quality oil that you can afford. Stay away from corn, canola, soy and flax oils.
9. How often should I do it?
Anywhere from twice a day to three times a week.
If you’re unwell or feeling as though you could really use a detox, increase the amount.
In regards to doing it as a lifestyle, 3-5 times a week will suffice.
11. I don’t have much time in the morning, can I do it at night?
You can. However the reason why it is recommended to do this first thing in the morning, is because this is the time of day when your stomach is most likely to be empty. An empty stomach helps prevent against gagging, plus it’s the perfect time to get rid of a lot of the bacteria that’s built up in your mouth overnight.
Oil pulling is a great multi-tasking activity. Swish while you check your email, make breakfast or even when you have a shower.
You will make time for what is important to you.
12. Is there anything I should worry about?
Like about life? Um, probably a lot.
In regards to oil pulling though, it has yet to be reported as a risky holistic practice.
The worst thing that could happen is a medical report being eventually brought out, stating the whole thing is a scam and all the benefits were just psychological.
But oil pulling should never be considered harmful. This isn’t like the great ear candle debate.
The most common complaint is that when spitting the oil out, people have clogged up their drains over time. So now we know to spit the oil into the trash as opposed to the sink or toilet.
If that’s the worst complaint then I think oil pulling is doing pretty good so far.
14. I just tried it and only lasted 8 minutes. I can’t do this!
Oh but you can! You can!
If you’re having difficulties, remember that it only gets better after each time.
Try not to over-swish… your jaw will get tired and you will build up too much saliva.
Use your tongue if you need to gently move the oil around in your mouth.
Keep your head down to prevent gagging.
Do not swallow! The oil is supposedly removing toxins from your mouth, if you swallow the oil you’re also swallowing the toxins. If you feel the urge to swallow, spit the oil out, take another spoonful and go from there.
You can do this!
15. What do I do afterwards? Do I still need to brush my teeth?
Many people have said that their teeth feel so clean after oil pulling that they don’t even brush them.
But many people are crazy.
You can decide whether or not to keep brushing, but one thing that is recommended for everyone, is a gentle salt water rinse afterwards.
Put some salt in a cup and fill it with just enough warm water to cover it. Swish this around your mouth to get rid of all those leftover toxins and then rinse.
17. Is it okay for kids?
Children can do oil pulling under the supervision of an adult and by using a reduced amount of oil. You want to make sure that they do not accidentally swallow the oil.
However, expecting a child to swish oil for 20 minutes is quite a request.
Perhaps leave the oil pulling for those 13 and older.
19. I’m so excited about all of the beneficial health possibilities, I feel like I’m going to cry!
That’s okay, I understand. Calm down, buy some oil and give it a go.
You’ll be glowing from the inside out in no time.
