Caffeine resets your body clock by holding back rise in level of melatonin, which is the major sleep hormone for the body. Fluctuation in the level of melatonin helps the body determine the natural hours to get to sleep and also wake up.
Dr. John added that the present findings could carry important implications for those suffering from circadian sleep disorders, where the normal body clock malfunctioned or even in getting help to overcome jet lag. The current findings also provide a more comprehensive explanation for why it gets harder for some people to fall asleep after they had consumed coffee in the later hours of the evening. The reason simply is that the internal body clock reckons that the individual is an hour behind the normal sleeping time.
